Age-Friendly Communities
Thank you for being a part of the CORE Alberta community!
This month we will share some of the wonderful work and research being done around Age-Friendly Communities.
What does an age-friendly community look like, and how can we be conscious of age-friendly principles when designing a community? Building connected and supportive communities for older adults can have many meanings and possibilities. One way is to look deeper at dementia-friendly parks, communities, and villages and how we build communities for people to age in place. Other questions to ask could be:
- How safe is the neighbourhood or the housing?
- Are there connector programs to address social isolation, loneliness, and digital literacy-based exclusion among older adults?
- How is houselessness addressed in community planning?
- Are there transportation supports for folks to get where they need to go?
- Is the community in a food desert where it may be difficult to access healthy and affordable food options?
- What other supports are set up for older Albertans to age in the right place in both rural and urban settings?
- How are we setting up equitable, age-friendly ecosystems that support community participation?
The World Health Organization released a new guide and toolkit in April 2023, providing a clear framework for developing age-friendly cities and communities. These support their previous resources around age-friendly cities and communities (2007 and 2010). Building an age-friendly community relies on many different layers and elements. Together we can look deeper at community design and develop strong community supports to make Alberta one of the best places to grow older.
