Thank you for being a part of the CORE Alberta community!

This week we are looking a little deeper into Food Security. According to a University of Toronto study, Alberta has the highest rate of household food insecurity across Canada at a rate of 20.3%, with severe food insecurity at 6.3% and moderate food insecurity at 9.4%! Severe food insecurity means “missed meals, reduced food intake and going day(s) without food.”

These numbers are enormous and speak to the increased systems change needed in Alberta to ensure older Albertans have reliable and equitable access to food so they can age with dignity and good health. The report states that “the prevalence of household food insecurity in Canada matters because food insecurity is such a potent social determinant of health. Food-insecure people are much more likely than others to suffer from chronic physical and mental health concerns and infectious and non-communicable diseases.” Community-Based Senior Serving organizations play an integral role in shaping food systems and policy and enhancing food access initiatives across the province.
