What Is Gerontechnology, and How Can It Enable Safety, Independence, and a Better Quality of Life?

Gerontechnologies, sometimes also referred to as assistive technologies, are useful in supporting a host of aging in place needs, including daily and instrumental activities, facilitating social connection and communication, enhancing mobility, health/wellness, safety/security, physical and cognitive activity, lifelong learning and healthy longevity. Just over the last decade, a number of innovations have emerged to support aging in place. As more assistive and smart technology is becoming readily available, including sensors, artificial intelligence, voice, internet of things, virtual reality, robots along with older adults receptivity to embrace these tools/devices are giving ‘aging in place’ with gerontechnologies a promising outlook.
Technology continues to be an integral part of our daily lives. Almost every day, new agetech/gerontech is introduced to the marketplace that takes human possibilities to the next level. While every technological advancement is not for everyone, it is useful to know what is available and how it can supplement ones or a family members regular needs. Today's Gerontechnology/assistive technology marketplace offers thousands of innovative low, mid and high technology solutions for Aging-in-Place. A few examples include voice assistants, medication management systems, fall prevention devices, wearables, social connectedness technologies, remote patient monitoring systems and much more!
