Turtle Island Workshop Series: Indigenous Peoples, Colonialism, and Reconciliation

Dates: Wednesday, June 18 and Thursday, June 19, 2025

Time: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM MDT each day

Location: Online (Microsoft Teams)

📚 Note: This workshop is delivered in four segments over two days. Participants must attend both days to receive a certificate of attendance. A Microsoft Teams link will be sent to your registered email two days before the first session.

About the Series:

This introductory series provides an overview of the histories, laws, and policies that shaped the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and Canada. It is intended to support participants in strengthening or expanding their understanding of Indigenous histories and the ongoing impacts of colonialism today.

The series is divided into four segments presented over two days:

June 18:

  • Segment One: The Doctrine of Discovery and the formation of Canada.
  • Segment Two: Canadian laws aimed at the dispossession and cultural genocide of Indigenous Peoples.

June 19:

  • Segment Three: Indigenous resistance to settler colonial agendas and laws.
  • Segment Four: Challenging colonial narratives and using the TRC Calls to Action and UNDRIP to support reconciliation.

Participants will also explore Indigenous worldviews, the importance of treaties, and how Indigenous Peoples assert their inherent rights and revitalize their connections to land, culture, and language.

  • Registration provides access to all four segments on both days.
  • Participants must attend both days to be eligible for a certificate of attendance.
  • Sessions will be delivered live through Microsoft Teams.
