event and training image

HR Fundamentals for the Non-Profits Professionals. Attend all six or individual ones that work for your organization's needs.

Whether you are brand new to HR, hoping to move into an HR role, or you just need a refresher, participants in this series will walk away with the skills and confidence needed to perform basic Human Resources functions in the evolving non-profit work world.

This online series of course is designed specifically for non-HR professionals. Course topics include human rights & employment standards, interviewing and selection skills, compensation & benefits, performance reviews, progressive discipline and terminations.

Please note: None of the sessions will be recorded in order to protect participant confidentiality.

Sessions take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

You can register to attend all six sessions or individual sessions!

Session 1: Human Rights & Employment Standards

In this session, you will gain valuable knowledge about human rights and employment standards and their implications in the workplace. This session will provide you with the top employment standards “traps” and provide you with clarity on the provincial Human Rights protected grounds. You will also learn about risk management from an HR perspective and gain tips on how to prevent discrimination/harassment claims.

Session 2: Interviewing and Selection Skills

The best employment situations happen when job candidates and employment opportunities are well matched. This session will help you develop your recruiting skills by honing in on how to determine if prospective candidates will be able to do the job and whether they have the desire to do the job they have applied for. You will learn how to design effective interview questions and also learn about what you should not ask during an interview.

Session 3: Compensation & Benefits

In order to retain good employees, you need to ensure you are paying them fairly for the job they are doing. How you compensate your employees (including benefits) is a major factor in employee attraction, retention, and engagement. In this session, you will learn about what to consider when determining job salaries and also gain insight on what employees are looking for when it comes to benefits and perks.

Session 4: Performance Reviews

Assessing employee performance is a critical skill for all leaders. This session will help you understand the roles and functions of employers and employees in performance management and prepare you to design and roll out an effective performance management system.

Session 5: Progressive Discipline

Employee discipline can be a tricky subject. Clear progressive discipline practices and step by step policies and procedures can help ease the discomfort for everyone involved. This session will cover best practices in employee discipline such as proper documentation of performance matters and how to have that difficult conversation with your employee.

Session 6: Terminations

Do you know the difference between termination “with cause” and termination “without cause”? In this session, we will discuss key points to consider when it comes to termination. The reality is there may come a time when you have to make the difficult decision to terminate an employee. This session will guide you through how to prepare for the termination meeting if and when the need should arise

Registration deadline: Each session will close one (1) day beforehand. The group of six will close the day before the first session.
