The report "Age-Proofing AI: Enabling an Intergenerational Workforce to Benefit from AI" by Generation examines the integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in workplaces and its implications for midcareer and older workers. Conducted with support from Google.org and The SCAN Foundation, the study highlights how AI adoption is reshaping employment practices, skill requirements, and opportunities for workers aged 45 and older in the United States and Europe. The research incorporates perspectives from 2,610 midcareer workers and 1,488 hiring managers across France, Ireland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Key Findings:

AI and Workforce Dynamics:

  • Generative AI tools—capable of producing text, images, videos, and other content—are being rapidly adopted by employers to enhance productivity.
  • However, workers aged 45+ are underrepresented in this trend, with only 15% currently using AI tools at work (13% in the U.S. and 17% in Europe).
  • Among those who have adopted AI, many are self-taught, demonstrating adaptability and proficiency despite the low usage rates.

Decline in Hiring and Age Bias:

  • Employers anticipate a significant drop in entry- and mid-level hiring within the next year, ranging from 22% to 64% across various sectors.
  • Age biases persist, with hiring managers preferring younger candidates for AI-related roles, perceiving older workers as less adaptable to new technologies.
  • For roles involving AI tools, managers are three times more likely to favor candidates under 35 over those aged 60 or above.

Ambivalence Among Older Workers:

  • Many midcareer and older employees remain uncertain about AI's relevance to their roles, reflecting a gap in understanding how AI tools can complement their skills.
  • This hesitancy aligns with broader research indicating that experienced workers often lack clear guidance on integrating AI into their workflows.
