On March 24, 2022, the CORE Elder Abuse Group hosted an event to cover the rising romance scams experienced by older adults. Due to increased social isolation and loneliness during COVID-19, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported losses of $139 million in 2020 due to romance scams, which were the biggest source of fraud reported by individuals 60-80.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) covered the characteristics of scammers, specifics of Romance Scams, red flags, how to be proactive to avoid being a victim and what to do if it happens.
