Opinion: Let’s Make Edmonton an ‘Age-Friendly’ Community
Aging is an inevitable reality — not only do people and communities change demographically, our buildings and infrastructure transform and shift overtime. This ongoing change presents us with incredible opportunities to build a city that works well for everyone.
For me, like many of us, the importance of this hit close to home through a personal experience with my grandmother who, rather suddenly and urgently, required significant care but she was unable to do so in the community she had lived in for the last 40 years. Rather, she had to move away. Our neighbourhood did not serve her needs well as she aged, and her requirements changed. While not every community can have a continuing-care facility located within it, there is a whole spectrum of housing and amenities that can and do provide for people of different ages and abilities, for longer.
