‘Money Is Not Going as Far’: Food Bank Campaigns Become More Urgent as Inflation Rises
The demand for hampers across the province has risen by 30 per cent from 2019 to 2021, said Food Banks Alberta CEO Arianna Scott whose agency represents 109 food banks.
“We’re seeing new families and that’s increasing every month,” she said.
In Alberta, 38 per cent of food bank recipients are children, compared to 33 per cent nationally, said Scott.
Nearly a third of food bank clients are seniors or the disabled living on fixed income or benefits. They are particularly impacted by inflation.
