Jagmeet Singh says ending for-profit long-term care will be ‘less costly.’ Why it’s not necessarily that simple
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his pledge to end for-profit long-term care will not just improve seniors’ care, it’ll lighten the public purse.
Standing outside the Mississauga headquarters of long-term care home owner Rivera Inc. on Tuesday, Singh said: “I want every single cent of money that we spend going directly to care. In fact, it is less costly if our money is going to care than if it is going to care plus profit. We want it to all go towards care.”
While costs can mean more than just money — the Star has reported on the disproportionate death toll in for-profit homes throughout the pandemic — it’s not necessarily true to say for-profit homes put a bigger burden on taxpayers.
