Embracing Online Service Options for Seniors

As part of Alberta government’s commitment to providing seniors with easy and secure access to important programs and services, changes are being made to the information package that Albertans receive six months before their 65th birthday. This package contains essential details about various programs available to seniors.

What’s Currently Included in the Information Package?

Traditionally, the information package has included:

  • Proof of Age form: Necessary to enroll in Coverage for Seniors program administered by Alberta Blue Cross.
  • Seniors Programs and Services Quick Facts information sheet: A comprehensive brochure highlighting federal supports, provincial health, housing, and income supports.
  • Seniors Financial Assistance Application, Information Booklet, and return envelope: To facilitate the application for financial assistance.

Upcoming Changes: Promoting Online Applications

Starting in August 2024, enhancements to this package emphasize the benefits of applying for Seniors Financial Assistance online. The updated package will include:

  • Proof of Age form
  • Seniors Programs and Services Quick Facts information sheet
  • Instructions for Online Application: Guidance for seniors on how to complete their Seniors Financial Assistance Application online by visiting sfa.alberta.ca.

Advantages of Applying Online

The use of online services is growing, and this trend is also evident among seniors. Offering online application options provides a safe, efficient, and cost-effective way for seniors to access services. By registering for an Alberta.ca verified account, seniors can enjoy several benefits:

  • Application Status and History: View the status of their applications, payment history, and program-related letters and documents.
  • Convenient Updates: Easily update banking information, address, or telephone number.
  • Special Needs Assistance Claims: Make claims for the Special Needs Assistance for Seniors program.
  • Access to Other Government Services: Including MyHealth Records and more.

Support for Those Unable to Apply Online

An alternative is still available for those unable to apply online. Seniors can call the Alberta Supports Contact Centre toll-free at 1-877-644-9992 to request a traditional application package by mail.

For more information or assistance, visit sfa.alberta.ca or contact Alberta Supports Contact Centre.
