Supporting Caregivers
Thank you for being a part of the CORE Alberta community!
This week we have a feature on caregivers and how to support caregivers in your workplace. Caregivers make up approximately one-third (35%) of the Canadian workforce, and 45% of caregivers find balancing caregiving with work stressful. More than 50% of caregivers in Alberta are employed full-time.
Here are some resources we have compiled:
- Unpaid Family Caregiving – The Next Frontier of Gender Equity in a Post-Pandemic Future | Nathan M. Stall, MD, Ph.D.; Nirav R. Shah, MD, MPH; Devika Bhushan, MD, JAMA Network
- Clarifying the Role of Essential Family Caregivers with Policy Strategist Julian Morelli | Dementia Spotlight Podcast
- Exacerbated Inequalities: A Scoping Review of the Experiences of Older Persons During Conflict Situations | American Geriatrics Society
- Caregivers in the Workplace Toolkit | The Ontario Caregiver Organization

Do you want to collaborate on supporting caregivers in this province? We have a CORE Alberta Caregivers group that shares resources, events, and learnings around caregiving.
As always, if there are important topics that you would like more information on or possibilities you would like to explore, please connect with us.
Extreme Weather Preparedness
With wildfires still raging in the province, heat warnings, and high summer temperatures, we must support the safety and well-being of older Albertans and prepare for extreme conditions in the community.
Wildfire preparedness and thunderstorms, lightning, and hail resources from the Government of Alberta can help ensure you are ready to go at a moment’s notice. The province also has resources for extreme heat, tornadoes and extreme winds, air quality interactive data, and other emergency scenarios older adults and their pet companions may encounter this summer.
Here are some additional resources:

- Webinar: Advancing Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Recovery for Older Adults
- Podcast: On Emergency Preparedness, with Barbara McMillan and Amaan Fazal
