Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day

Everyone is welcome to join Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani, Premier Jason Kenney, Minister of Indigenous Relations Rick Wilson and Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi on June 20 at Edmonton City Centre, on the main floor at the west entrance, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. for Indigenous performances, stories and food.

Indigenous people continue to contribute greatly to the cultural and historical fabric of this province and this free event is a chance for everyone to learn more about the rich traditions, art and history of Indigenous people in Alberta.

There will be a blessing by Elder Bert Auger, drumming by Mountain Cree, and performances by Inuk knowledge-keeper Goota Desmarais and her partner Alaina Aggart, the Métis Child and Family Dancers, Zachary Willier, Sheena Papin, Kheriyae Christian, Charlie Quintal and Elijah Halfe.

• In Alberta, six per cent of the population identifies as First Nations, Métis or Inuit.
• June is National Indigenous History Month and all people in Alberta are encouraged to participate in events being held throughout the province.
• June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, with events being held both in person and virtually throughout the province.
