Addressing swallowing issues as we age
The ability to swallow is something most of us take for granted; however, in older adults, it can become a serious and life-threatening problem if it's impaired and nor properly addressed. Swallowing disorders, also called dysphagia, can affect up to 30% of older adults. Further, it’s now considered a geriatric syndrome by many experts due to its growing prevalence and health impact in older adults
Why does it matter? Swallowing disorders can lead to fear and an anxiety to eat, weight loss, lung infections and even an increased risk of dying.
