Supporting Albertans with Advance Care Planning: The Plan Ahead Toolkit

Advance care planning (ACP) is a crucial process that helps individuals consider their future care preferences, particularly for those in palliative or end-of-life care.
ACP has been shown to honor patient wishes, reduce conflicts and burdens on loved ones, and enhance the quality of life for patients. Despite these benefits, according to the Albertans’ views on advance care planning & palliative care survey conducted in 2024, 39% of Albertans are aware of ACP without prompting. Additionally, 44% of Albertans have a will, 28% have a personal directive, and 27% have an enduring power of attorney.
Organizations serving Albertans have a unique opportunity to ensure more people are prepared for their future healthcare needs by utilizing the Plan Ahead Toolkit. This toolkit provides comprehensive information on health, financial, and estate planning in Alberta, along with guidance and resources to conduct successful community initiatives (e.g., education sessions) on these topics.
