Strathmore's Men's Shed had its official launch earlier this week.

The group's first meeting took place on Monday (Dec. 8) at HOB's Gaming Cafe in Strathmore. The men were provided with coffee from the Strathmore Starbucks and pizza from Strathmore's Domino's.

"We had about 20 guys show up. This was a combination of guys who had heard about it through Facebook or our information session," said organizer Greg Farrell. "We discussed how we see the Men's Shed growing and building."

During the meeting, they came up with several ideas, such as volunteering in the community, creating a charity coffee roast, and helping build infrastructure projects for feral cats.

"We also found a man who has a seacan full of woodworking equipment, and if we can find a building in the future, we could set up this equipment where people could go and build stuff."

The Men's Shed program began in Australia in the 1990s and has spread to several provinces across Canada. The shed serves as a place where men over 18 years old can come together. Some Men's Shed groups take on projects such as woodworking, construction, electrical repairs, or fixing bikes, while others focus on puzzles, games, or social gatherings.
