[News] Accessible & seniors' transit being added to rural Southern Alberta communities

Seniors and people with disabilities in select communities will have an easier time getting around.

The Government of Alberta is launching the second phase of its Healthy Aging Alberta program.

It provides accessible and affordable transportation services for seniors and Albertans with mobility issues.

Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon says rural communities are vital to the province’s identity and success, and this program helps to ensure seniors age with dignity and respect.

“This investment will provide a lifeline for seniors and those with mobility issues by empowering them with the freedom to access essential services and social outings. Our government is making sure seniors can remain active and independent by investing in this program, helping seniors age in the rural communities they call home,” says Nixon.

Phase one targeted five areas in central and northern Alberta.

A total of 14 communities are part of phase two, five of which are in southern Alberta. The local programs will share a combined $766,635 in funding.

• Crowsnest Pass – $216,653
• Claresholm – $175,000
• Siksika First Nation – $175,000
• Foothills Region – $146,337
• Milk River – $53,645
