On Monday, June 1, 2026, during the Seniors’ Week Provincial Launch Event, the City of Grande Prairie was recognized with the Age-Friendly Alberta Recognition Award. The award recognizes communities that are taking meaningful steps to support older adults by creating inclusive, accessible, and supportive environments.
Launched in 2024, the City’s Aging Well Together initiative was developed to better understand and respond to the needs of residents aged 55 and older. Through surveys, open houses, and discussions, 721 residents, caregivers, service providers, and community organizations helped shape the Aging Well Together 2025 Priorities & Goals, which outlines practical actions to support aging well in Grande Prairie.
The initiative focuses on accessibility, mobility and connectivity, communication and technology, affordable living, social participation and wellness, and community supports for older adults. Grande Prairie has already made strong progress through initiatives such as weekly walking groups, expanded recreation programming, intergenerational activities, volunteer supports, accessibility improvements, and partnerships with the Primary Care Network.
