Elder Abuse is any action or inaction by a person in a position of trust that causes harm or distress to an older adult within the scope of emotional, financial, medication, physical, neglect or sexual abuse. The two most frequently identified and reported types of elder abuse in Canada are financial and emotional.

If you or someone you know may be experiencing elder abuse, please call the 24/7 Elder Abuse Resource Line at 403-705-3250 for consultation, resources, or to request shelter space. 

To file a report on a suspected case of elder abuse, or to request a welfare check on an individual at risk, please call the Calgary Police Non-Emergency line at 403-266-1234. 

If you are in emotional distress, please call Distress Centre Calgary at 403-266-4357.

If this is an emergency or someone you know is at immediate risk, please call 911.

Unison Calgary - Elder Abuse Shelter

The Unison Elder Abuse Shelter is for individuals of any gender — aged 55 or older — who are actively escaping abuse.  The Unison Elder Abuse Shelter offers individuals a safe place to stay while actively working with caseworkers to transition back into the community safely and sustainably.

Elder Abuse Response Team (EART)

The Elder Abuse Response Team (EART) was established in 2011 as a collaboration between Carya, Calgary Police Service, and Unison. This multidisciplinary team of social workers and police officers work together to identify, investigate, and support high risk and/or chronic cases of elder abuse.

Our team is committed to reducing incidents of elder abuse and collaborates to:

  • Respond to and investigate suspected cases of elder abuse.
  • Provide support and guidance to abuse victims and their families.
  • Assist other service providers working with abuse victims and provide information about elder abuse to professionals and organizations who work with older adults.
