WESeniors Community Hub, Westend Seniors Activity Centre
Westend Seniors Activity Centre (WSAC) is a charitable non-profit organization founded in 1978 and based in Edmonton, Alberta. For the past 43 years, WSAC has been serving seniors in Edmonton providing social, recreation, healthy, fitness and special interest activities to help seniors remain active and vital. WSAC has actively taken part in many of the national, provincial, and municipal level initiatives to engage seniors of all backgrounds (e.g., mainstream, ethnic minority, Indigenous seniors) to achieve healthy aging in communities. WSAC currently delivers over 130 recreation/social programs and drop-in activities to over 2,000 members all year round. WSAC provides a wide variety of opportunities to engage 200+ volunteers who contribute over 20,000 hours per year. In 2019, WSAC won the 2019 Minister’s Seniors Service Award, one of the only two organizations Alberta-wide.
The "WESeniors Community Hub", created in June 2018, is an inclusive & welcoming virtual/physical hub that embraces innovation, sustainability and partnership. This Hub:
- has developed a multi-media (i.e., TV, Radio, Print, Digital) marketing platform that creates content and information that actively encourages, engages, empowers, and educates adults 55+ and their families/caregivers/peers;
- has created an innovative "community connectors program" that establish win-win sustainable partnerships with multi-sectoral (public, private, nonprofit) organizations;
- has created the "yeg Seniors Alliance" to rapidly respond to the unprecedented challenges of the global pandemic by sharing resources, expertise, and experiences with other organizations.
The "WESeniors Community Hub" enables adults 55+ in achieving their potential to "age actively" - that is, to live in security, enjoy good health and continue to participate fully in society.
