Injury Prevention Centre's Poison Prevention Program

Poisonings are a major cause of unintentional injuries in Alberta.

• In 2018, Alberta’s poison centre, PADIS, received over 25,000 calls concerning poisoning.
• 70% of child poisonings needing hospital treatment involved medications.
• Since the beginning of COVID-19, the number of calls to PADIS concerning exposures to disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and bleaches has increased 73%. Calls from seniors increased by 89%.

The Injury Prevention Centre has developed poison prevention resources that focus on preventing:

• Medication and cannabis poisoning in young children
• Poisonings from disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and other household cleaners

Community partners, parents, grandparents and caregivers can use these resources to provide valuable information on the safe handling and storage of medications, cannabis and household cleaners and disinfectants. Key actions to prevent poisoning and what to do in the event someone has been poisoned are provided using clear messages and colourful illustrations. All of the resources are free and available to download.
