Volunteer Management

Volunteers are essential to the work we do in community, and access to up-to-date resources can help organizations with their volunteer recruitment, management, training, and recognition, as well as learn about trends, issues, and opportunities in the volunteer sector in Alberta.

Volunteer Canada is monitoring the developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, heeding the advice of public health authorities and reaching out to our colleagues around the country and internationally, to develop strategies related to volunteer engagement, corporate community engagement, and continuity planning. Helpful resources can be found here, including a collection of resources on Volunteer Management and Emergency Response, Virtual Volunteering, Volunteer Safety, and Mental Health Supports, as well as COVID-19 volunteering opportunities.

The Screening Handbook:Tools and Resources for the Voluntary Sector, from Volunteer Canada, provides tools and resources to better match people and organizations, improve the safety and quality of programs in communities, and reduce risks and liability.

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT HANDBOOK: A Resource for Service-Providing Organizations Assisting Newcomers to Canada, also from Volunteer Canada, provides a general overview of the volunteer management process with a focus on volunteers supporting newcomers. It includes links to useful tools, resources and templates to help develop and implement these practices in your organization. Use this handbook as a road map to create or update policies, procedures and practices to fit your organization.

The Value of Volunteering Wheel illustrates the many benefits of volunteering to building confidence, competence, connections, and community. It also serves as a portal to research that examines the social and economic value to organizations, neighbourhoods, businesses, society-at-large and to volunteers themselves.

Allies in Aging's Volunteer Training Modules are designed to help volunteers and service providers better identify seniors who are isolated, understand their needs, and connect them with appropriate services and resources. Many of the training modules will connect you with resources you can download to conduct interactive workshops for volunteers and staff who work with seniors. Additional material is available for each module, for example, Fact Sheets on Risk Factors affecting Social Isolation of Seniors, such as Caregiver Burnout, Physical Health, Mental Health, Low Income, Life Transitions and Linguistic and Cultural Barriers.
